PARTNERSHIP PROCESS
Hopen is interested in a variety of promising early- to mid-stage life science product ideas – pharmaceuticals, devices, and other technologies. Our partnership process varies depending on the nature of the product, but an inventor/IP owner can generally expect the following from a relationship with Hopen:
  • We take a thorough, practical approach to investment selection and execution, reviewing all ideas/proposals submitted.
  • Once past the initial screening, we enter a due diligence process, which may be followed by a contractual agreement. A typical agreement would preserve a significant equity position for the scientific inventor.
  • Drawing from our resource network, we form a specialized team to accelerate product development. The focus is on building product value through efficiency.
  • As development progresses, we form strategic alliances with outside partners to bring the product to market. Several business options are considered, including joint venture, outright sale, etc.
  • Hopen remains involved with the scientific inventor throughout all stages of the process, working to facilitate rapid product development and value creation.

SUPPORT FOR THE INVESTMENT
Hopen Therapeutics supports its portfolio investments by providing:
  • Strategic guidance – Hopen’s leadership team stays actively involved by setting the focus and vision, tracking progress to goals, and advising on high-level issues. We also carefully manage business alliances and work to help inventors realize their vision.
  • Managerial support – Our staff can take the lead in project management by establishing work plans, budgets, and milestones; forming efficient project teams; handling regulatory file submission and marketing authorizations; managing intellectual property issues; and creating effective lifecycle management strategies.
  • Financial support – Hopen assumes the financial risk for its invested companies/projects, providing full funding for the duration of the development process. We commit for longer periods of time than strict venture capitalists, because we’re interested in commercial success.
  • Product pipeline expertise – Hopen oversees the product development process and negotiates effective agreements with individuals and institutions offering scientific, regulatory, clinical, and market development expertise.

PHARMACEUTICAL EXAMPLE: MAKING A MATCH
To ensure a successful fit between our capabilities and a potential investment, Hopen evaluates opportunities using several criteria. Some of our best avenues to building value in the pharmaceutical arena include:
  • Compelling target – Candidates must be in the life science field and hold significant promise, but the therapeutic focus is open.
  • Known lead compound – In the pharmaceutical field, ideal candidates are often focused on orphan drug compounds and institutionally sponsored compounds.
  • Identified therapeutic market – Ideal candidates offer a strong market potential and clear freedom to operate in developed markets (including NDA/ANDA).
  • Positive animal study results – In the pharmaceutical market, ideal candidates are in the pre-clinical to early clinical development stage, allowing us to put our resource network to work in the development gap.
